The Smyrna-Clayton Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m., followed by a ceremony at the Veterans Monument at Wright Municipal Park.
The Smyrna-Clayton Memorial Day Parade will be held Monday, May 28 at 10 a.m., beginning in downtown Smyrna and ending at Wright Municipal Park (formerly Smyrna Municipal Park) on North Main Street, across from North Smyrna Elementary.
Memorial Day committee member Tom Emerson said the parade will start at the intersection of Market Street Plaza and West Commerce Street, travel east on Commerce Street to Main Street, then turn north (left) on Main Street, cross Glenwood Avenue and end at the park.
Line-up for all parade participants is at 9:15 a.m., at Market Street Plaza near the Smyrna Town Hall and post office.
Anyone or any organization interested in participating in the parade should call Grant Nash at 302-363-4280 or Emerson at 302-363-1021.
“We are accepting participants all the way up to the day of the parade,” Emerson said.
Immediately following the parade, a memorial service will be held at the Smyrna Clayton Veterans Monument at the park.
“Our keynote speaker this year will be U.S. Army Veteran Mary Johnson,” said Emerson.
In case of inclement weather, the parade will be cancelled; however, a memorial ceremony will still be held at the Clayton Fire Hall at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, May 28.
The committee is requesting military flags or monetary donations to cover maintenance and upkeep for the veterans monument. Donations can be made out to “Smyrna Clayton Veterans Memorial Fund.” Organizations or families wishing to donate are asked to call Emerson at 302-363-1021 or email CHC44101@comcast.net so that you can be called up to be recognized during the ceremony.
