Workshop conflicted with job duties.

Editor:

I want to clarify the discussion concerning my unavailability for the recent City Council Workshop on Friday January 26th, 2018. The City Council decided, by a majority census, to schedule this event between 9:30 am to 2:30 pm. This decision was unfortunate, as it conflicted with my State of Delaware essential employee work schedule, as it would for any person employed to work a traditional business operating schedule.

I received the Workshop notification from the City Clerk on January 18 at 9:01 am and responded at 11:47 am, that my attendance was unlikely due the nature of my responsibilities as the Primary Instructor for the current cadet class with the Department of Correction Training Academy. My employment situation doesn’t currently afford the same scheduling flexibility as the other Council Representatives.

Every Council representative wants to participate to the fullest extent possible to serve their constituents’ interests. Situations, however, do arise that prevent such good intentions. City business can also occasionally be time sensitive and require action before a complete assembly of Council representatives are available. My hope is that this was the exception and not the rule moving forward with scheduling Council Business and future Workshops.
