Wesley College will offer a new concentration in music education starting during the fall 2018 semester.
The program is designed for students to go directly into Wesley’s Master of Art in teaching program, where they would complete their student teaching and certification within five years from start to finish.
The new curriculum was designed by Wesley’s Director of Bands Jordan Kinsey, working in collaboration with Wesley’s Education Department. Kinsey has taught instrumental and vocal music in the public schools of Kentucky, Kansas, Missouri and Pennsylvania in a variety of rural and suburban school environments.
Kinsey explained the reason for the program is that “for years, many high school students in Delaware who wanted to pursue a career in music education would leave the state to do so, and many of them didn’t come back to teach here after finishing their degree. Somewhat counterintuitively, an abnormal percentage of Delaware’s music educators received their training out of state. One of this program’s primary objectives is to keep Delaware students in Delaware, where they can contribute to the musical education of their own communities.”
