The incident took place at about 7:21 a.m. Monday, Nov. 13, just south of the intersection of Pearsons Corner and Yoder roads, Delaware State Police spokeswoman Master Cpl. Melissa Jaffe said.

The 51-year-old man was driving a horse and buggy down Pearson’s Corner Road it was struck from behind by a 2014 Chevrolet Equinox. The horse broke free and ran away, but later was found unhurt at a nearby farm.

The SUV driver, identified as Lauren Nickerson, was issued a citation for careless driving, Jaffe said. Nickerson was wearing her seatbelt and was not hurt, she added.

The buggy driver was taken to Bayhealth Hospital Kent Campus for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
