DSP spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier on Sunday night identified the woman as Patricia L. Jones of Milford.

The investigation into Jones' death is continuing, Fournier added.

ORIGINAL STORY:

Investigators with the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit are probing a fatal motor vehicle crash that took place near Frederica.

Division spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said the crash took place at about 12:07 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 21 on State Route 1, north of South Frederica Road.

Police have learned a 54-year-old Milford woman was running toward the north in the southbound lanes of the road when she went into the path of a 2004 Nissan Altima, driven by a 33-year-Milford man.

The driver spotted the woman and swerved to avoid her, but was unable to do so, Fournier said. The car hit the woman, throwing her into a left lane of traffic, where she was hit again by a passing tractor-trailer.

The Nissan’s driver was able to stop, but the tractor-trailer continued on without halting. He was wearing his seatbelt and was not hurt.

The woman, whose name has not been released, was pronounced dead at the scene. Fournier said she was dressed all in dark clothing, non-reflective clothing and was not carrying a light. Alcohol is being considered as a factor on her behalf, he said.

Further details will be released as they become available.
