UPDATE: The Delaware State Police have released the name of the driver of the Toyota pickup truck involved in yesterday's fatal crash south of Lewes as 40-year-old Thomas C. Frederick, of Lewes.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident.
The Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit is investigating a fatal crash that occurred Monday afternoon south of Lewes.
The incident occurred around 1:20 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 9, as a 40-year-old Lewes man was operating a 2000 Toyota Tundra northbound on Coastal Highway (Route 1) in the left lane, just south of Dartmouth Drive. At the same time, a 25-year-old Lewes female was operating a 2015 Chrysler 200 sedan southbound on Coastal Highway in the left lane, in the same general vicinity. For undetermined reasons, the Tundra crossed the grass median into the southbound lanes and struck the Chrysler head-on.
The 40-year-old operator of the Tundra was not properly restrained and was transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare, where he was pronounced dead. His name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.
The 25-year-old female operator of the Chrysler was properly restrained and transported by EMS to Beebe Healthcare, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries.
The Collision Reconstruction Unit is continuing their investigation into this incident. Impairment may have been a factor on behalf of the operator of the Tundra. The two left lanes of Route 1 southbound and the far left lane of Route 1 northbound were closed for over two hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
