One of the oldest verifiable Dover photographs in the public archives is this home, circa 1881. Additional research based on writing on the back shows two men, Lyman and Elmer Powell, were born in Farmington; the family moved to Dover around 1876. The older woman is “great-great grandmother Powell,” while the African American woman is identified as “Aunt Jane.” She most probably is Sarah J. Ledmon, a servant who had been with the family since at least 1850. The home stood “in back of the Academy,” which would have been the Wilmington Conference Academy, now Wesley College.
Dover turns 300 this year. A new photo every Thursday.
