Police are looking for a man who tried to steal a woman's purse

Detectives with the Delaware State Police are asking the public’s help in identifying a man who tried to steal a woman’s purse while she was shopping.

The incident took place at about 2:15 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 15 in the Dollar General store at 56 West Birdie Land, Magnolia, division spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier said

A man, who already had been reported acting suspiciously, went up to the woman’s shopping cart and put his hand on her purse. Seeing this, the woman covered the purse with both hands and screamed that she was being robbed.

The man immediately started to run out of the store, throwing a box of laundry detergent at a store clerk who tried to stop him.

The suspect ran off to the south, Fournier said. Neither the victim nor the male store clerk was hurt, he said.

The suspect is a white man between 25 and 35 years old, standing between 5 feet 6 inches and 5 feet 8 inches tall. It’s estimated he weighed between 150 and 170 pounds.

The man was wearing gray shorts, a white T-shirt, and blue baseball cap. No weapons were seen, Fournier said.
