The driver was airlifted to Christiana Medical Center
Firefighters were able to rescue a pickup truck driver after he ran into a tractor-trailer late Sunday night.
Assistant Dover fire chief Michael O’Connor Jr. said the crash took place around 9:40 p.m. Aug. 20 in the 3800 block of Hazlettville Road. Rescuers arrived to find a full-sized Nissan pickup wedged under the side of a 53-foot trailer that had been backing into a driveway.
Emergency personnel started helping the driver as the tractor was disconnected and the trailer raise, O’Connor said. Eventually, the pickup was winched out from under the trailer, allowing rescuers to free the driver. This took about 12 minutes, O’Connor said.
He was later airlifted to Christiana Medical Center.
Investigators from the Delaware State Police are probing the crash, he added.
Backup crews from Cheswold and Little Creek were brought in to cover the Dover department’s territory, O’Connor said.
