Ryan Fuller’s path in life has taken many turns.

When he was a boy he wanted to be an airline pilot. Unfortunately, this dream was grounded by his lack of 20/20 vision.

Then he had made up his mind that he was going to become a scientist.

This plan was altered after he graduated from SUNY Oswego in New York. He’d accepted a laboratory position and was not impressed.

“I realized I’m much more of a people person than a laboratory person,” he said.

After realizing his strengths he decided to pursue a career in education

Now, he’s the new principal at Polytech High School.

“There’s always a need for good administrators,” Fuller said.

Former principal Jason Peel now works for Milford School District.

Part of Fuller’s plan as principal includes making sure students are using technology in an effective way.

“There are many things that we need to educate our youth on,” he said. “Technology is one, a relationship with their peers is another and making sure they are aware of every college and career opportunity is another.”

Why did you take the position?

This has been a goal of mine for a long time. I wanted to lead a great building and I found my home here at Polytech.

Why did you become an educator?

I’ve always been a people person and I love teaching and learning. I see myself as a lifelong learner and see this job as an opportunity to learn.

What kind of changes do you want to see?

We want to make sure we’ve got more certifications. Part of the measures that we look at the end of a high school degree is graduation rate, certifications and whether or not the student has dual enrollment courses.

We’re looking at all of our measures and figuring out as a team which ones we want to move forward with.

Education is one of continuous improvement and reflection. So any institution, no matter where they are, there is always opportunities for improvement.

What challenges do students face today?

Students have many demands on their time, whether it’s athletics, social pursuits, clubs and academics. Helping them navigate that world of setting priorities and goals and realizing every opportunity available is one of our primary goals.
