Most of March brought us rain that has helped our lawn grass grow; many of us are pulling out our mowers to launch this spring and summer’s long chore. Before we start up our mowers, why not take a few minutes to review a few safety tips.
- If using a new mower, read and re-read the manufacturer owner’s manual. Learn how to properly start and operate all controls on the machine.
- Walk carefully across your lawn and pick up stones, wire, toys, and dog bones — anything the mower could pick up and throw.
- Adjust the cutting height before starting the mower. The ideal mowing height is two inches; closer cutting weakens the lawn and opens it up to invasion by crabgrass and other weeds.
- Keep children, adults, and pets away from the mowing area to make sure they won’t come in contact with the mower or be hit by objects that may be thrown by the mower.
- Allow wet grass to dry before mowing. Never mow grass while it is wet.
- Wear close-fitting clothes and hard-soled shoes for better traction.
- Add fuel carefully and wipe up spills before starting your mower. In addition, allow the mower engine to cool before refueling.
- Mow in a forward direction as much as possible.
- Keep the cord away from the cutting path if using an electric mower. Also, make sure you keep the power cord in top condition.
- Always turn off the mower if leaving it, even for a moment.
- Enjoy the spring and summer, and have a safe lawn-cutting season.
