Jayne Gest, staff writer
1. 1980 USA Olympic hockey team — Although this was before my time, it's still probably the best modern example
2. Seabiscuit, the racehorse — I love both the true story and the movie

Sarika Jagtiani, staff writer
1. Daniel LaRusso, “The Karate Kid” — Of course, much of the credit goes to Mr. Miyagi.
2. Kevin Spacey, “American Beauty”
3. Lois Jenson, whose case became the first sexual harassment lawsuit to be given class action status (her story was the basis for the film “North Country”).

Maureen Raitz, editor
1. The New York Jets — They may not have come out on top this year but just getting to a championship game is pretty good for a team that is rebuilding every year.
2. Ronald Miller (Patrick Dempsey) in “Can’t Buy Me Love” — Sometimes the geek does get the girl.
3. Jesse “The Body” Ventura — A former pro wrestler is elected governor in Minnesota in 1998, setting the stage for Calfornia’s “Govinator.” Anything is possible in politics.
