The 77th Dover Days Festival's “Tourism Gives Back” event includes a free concert, carnival and car show, and has grown even more this year with the help of the Colonial Rotary. The Colonial Rotary will move its annual Dover Mile fun run/walk event to coincide with the April 30 Dover Days kick-off, "Tourism Gives Back."
The Dover Mile was started as a fundraiser on Flag Day for the Kent County Division of the American Heart Association and has occurred on State Street for more than 20 years. By moving it to the Friday before Dover Days Colonial Rotary expects to get more exposure for their sponsors and more participants. This in turn helps the Rotary Club raise more money for the community.
“Colonial Rotary Club is excited about the opportunity to blend our Dover Mile into a well established family event such as Dover Days," said Steve Grossman, Chairperson of the Dover Mile. "By moving it forward we hope to engage more of the community groups that we help, and help them raise the needed dollars to continue their work within Central Delaware.
“We look forward to expanding our reach to community groups helping them to help themselves through our 'group participation,' which allows any group of 25 or more to receive their donation back to help their organization. Partnering with Dover Days and Kent County Tourism will expose Rotary and its programs to a wide variety of people,” Grossman said.
The “Tourism Gives Back” event features a free concert by the Funsters, a car show, carnival, food vendors, the Dover Mile and a can goods drive for the Delaware Food Bank. The public is invited, free of charge, though a donation of canned goods will be appreciated.
