Budget woes have had a solid impact on the state’s readers and writers: The Delaware Book Festival won’t be taking over Legislative Mall this year, and Delaware Author’s Day was nearly canceled. Nearly. Instead, local organizers brought it back to the Delaware Agricultural Museum & Village so readers would have a chance to mingle with writers, illustrators and more.

1 What is it
Delaware Author’s Day features regional writers of every genre who set up shop in the Delaware Agricultural Museum for the day. Fans can browse books for sale, and meet the authors and illustrators. This year will include approximately 30 authors, from those published by large houses to self-published books, according to John Hanna, author, publisher and organizer.
“I wanted to see local authors recognized for their work. We have a lot more than you’d realize in the area,” Hanna said.

2 What about the kids
Kids’ crafting, face painting and a table with information on writing their own books will keep kids occupied while parents look around. The entire family can take a look around the museum, too, and listen to live music by Scrapple Creek Runners.

3 Writers
Some authors already have registered and some will wait until the day of the event. The ones who Hanna is counting on attending are Jack Bockmiller, Bruce and Marie Burgoyne, Donald Cole, Kathleen M. Doyle, Anee Floyd, James Milton Hanna, Brian A. Hartford, John and Hazel Jopling, Julie Kasten, Lee King, Morgan C. Lee, Abdullah Muhammad, Don Parks, Carol Psaros, Judy Reveal, George Roof, David Skocik, Brenda Tetreault and Norma Welch.

4 What types of books will be available
There will be a lot of books that only locals would appreciate, such as ones on the watermen on the Chesapeake Bay and Delaware’s role in the Revolutionary War. There also are books for children, history lovers, western fans and more.

5 How much is it
Admission is free to the event and to the museum.
