Every year, members of the Stitch in Time Quilt Guild weave stories of their heritage into vibrant blankets. They continue the tradition this year, joining the local chapter of the Links Inc. group for its Chocolate Hour program. The event is a not-to-miss celebration perfect for Black History Month.
1 The Chocolate Hour
Local performers will entertain families and refreshments will be served during the Chocolate Hour, which runs from 1 to 4 p.m. The celebration also features a health fair, including blood pressure screenings and educational information on breast cancer and diabetes. A black history program will run from 1 to 2:30 p.m., and refreshments, the quilt show and health fair will run from 2:30 to 4 p.m.
2 Quilts of all colors
A Stitch in Time Quilt Guild does it all when it comes to quilting, from exuberant crazy quilts to patriotic lap blankets to wall hangings with elaborate appliqué. Their work also tells a story. Some of their quilts are based on those used to convey messages during the Civil War era. The Underground Railroad quilts, for example, contained secret messages that helped slaves find their way to safe havens during their escape. The guild will present the history of quilt making in the African-American community during the Chocolate Hour.
3 Quilt show is a keeper
Although the Chocolate Hour is a one-day event, the quilt show is just starting. It will run through April, with some of the quilts available for purchase. Saturday’s event is free and open to the public, but for people who would like to see the quilts at another time the regular admission fee is $5, $3 for seniors and students and free for children 3 and younger and museum members.
4 Helping Haiti
The Links Inc. is teaming up with Good Feet Store to collect shoes for those in need in Haiti. They are asking guests to bring new or gently used shoes to the Chocolate Hour event, where they can drop off their shoes from 1 to 4 p.m.
5 New addition
While visitors are at the Ag Museum they can check out its latest addition, “Forestry in the First State.” The permanent gives an overview of how the state’s forests have played an important role in the state’s history and commerce.
