Music will fill the Smyrna Opera House this week with shows Friday and Saturday.
On Friday, April 6 at 7 p.m., a classical piano concert will feature University of Delaware piano students showcasing their talents.
Pianists scheduled to perform are Tongtong Shan and Juneessa Pressley, playing works by Beethoven, Chasins, Schumann, and Debussy.
On Saturday, April 7 at 7 p.m., the group Judy Sings the Blues returns by popular demand to the Opera House. Band members draw inspiration from artists such as Ella Fitzgerald, Etta James, Steve Vai, Aretha Franklin, Janis Joplin, Heart, Bonnie Raitt, Nina Simone, Stevie Ray Vaughn, the Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, ZZ Top, Muddy Waters, Buddy Guy, Albert King, B.B. King, Albert Collins, Junior Wells, Gary Moore and Susan Tedeschi.
Lead vocalist and percussionist Judy Mangini sings powerful and wide-ranging vocals with passion, strength, clarity and feeling, so not only do you hear the story, you feel it, too.
Lead guitarist Eric Zoeckler was heavily influenced by the masters of the blues like BB King, Albert Collins and John Lee Hooker. After moving from the Washington, D.C. area to Delaware in the early 90s, he formed June Evans & Mercy City and enjoyed playing at Atlantic City casinos, clubs in Philadelphia and Wilmington, and local blues festivals. More recently he played with Delaware Blues Hall of Famer Gretchen Emery.
Drummer James Sudimak attended The New School For Jazz & Contemporary Music in New York City from 2011 to 2013 but has the style of drummer who has been playing for decades with impeccable ability.
Bass player Carl Thompson, affectionately known as “Smiley,” has been playing in local bands for over 40 years, providing a rich, mellow tone, rhythm and groove that shines through every song.
Tickets for each show are $16 for general admission, $14 for Opera House members, senior citizens, and military personnel, and $8 for children 12 and under.
