Delaware State Police have arrested two people in connection with a string of recent burglaries.
The arrests were made Sept. 7 when a trooper was checking businesses on South State Street north of Sorghum Mill Road, said police spokesman Master Cpl. Bruce W. Harris.
As the trooper drove around to the rear of Cool Springs Restaurant, he saw a silver Honda Accord, occupied by a white male. As the trooper went up to the car, he spotted a second man fleeing into a nearby wooded area. A second trooper arrived shortly thereafter and caught that individual.
The men were identified as Jonathan D. Reed, 20, of Third Street, Wyoming and Ray L. Spicer, 20, of Equitation Lane, Felton.
During their investigation, detectives learned of three recent break-ins allegedly committed by the men. Using a search warrant, officers recovered an undisclosed amount of cash from the Honda, money thought to have been stolen during the burglaries.
Both men are suspected of taking part in break-ins at the Magnolia Restaurant, Magnolia, and Third Base Liquors in Frederica, both of which took place Sept. 7.
Reed is thought to have burglarized the Schultes Convenience Store, Wyoming, on July 23, where cigarettes, cash and a cash register were taken.
Police from Camden and Harrington also arrested the pair on similar charges, Harris said.
Based on the State Police invesgitation, both were charged with burglary, possession of burglar’s tools, theft under $1,500, conspiracy, criminal mischief and wearing a disguise during commission of a felony.
Additionally, Reed was charged with theft of more than $1,500.
Reed was ordered held on a $13,500 secured bond, and has been committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute, Georgetown. Spicer was ordered held on a $9,000 secured bond at the same institution.
Harris said detectives are investigating similar burglaries and ask anyone who has information on these crimes call Troop 3 at 697-4454.
