Kent County Levy Court Commissioners conducted a finance committee meeting Aug. 31 to review transportation funding allocations to senior centers.

Each year, the Delaware Transit Corporation provides money to the centers so they can provide transportation to seniors who need help going shopping or getting to appointments. Kent County Levy Court acts as a pass-through for the funding.

For fiscal year 2011, DTC provided $535,602, to be split between the county’s six senior centers.

However, funding requests from the centers totaled only $474,879, leading commissioners to consider giving the difference, or $59,502, to Kent-Sussex Industries.

Documentation provided Levy Court by DTC showed the Modern Maturity Center, Harvest Years Senior Center, Milford Senior Center and Harrington Senior Center spent less than their allocated funding in fiscal year 2010. The Mamie Warren and Frederica senior centers went over their allocated budgets.

Commissioners will hold a Sept. 21 business meeting, where the proposal, in the form of a resolution for payment, will undergo a public hearing and then a final vote.
