CAESAR RODNEY RIDERS
Head Coach: Bill Victory
2013 Record: 15-5 (Lost in Opening Round of DIAA Tournament)
Returnees: Whitney Victory, Simone London, Tiana Harris, Katelin Hardy, Alizae Dollins, Destiny Johnson, Jordan Moseley, Alissa Haith, Victoria Sebastian
Newcomers: Zoe Scott
Season Outlook: The Lady Riders return to the hardwood for another season fresh off a 15-5 2013 campaign. CR loses key contributors from last year’s team including Lexi Prillaman, Shakyra Cephas, Kasandra Lightburn, and Mya Moore. However, the Lady Riders have a number of returnees capable of filling the holes left vacant on this year’s squad. Returning for Caesar Rodney are seniors Whitney Victory, Simone London, Tiana Harris, and Alizae Dollins alongside returning underclassmen Destiny Johnson, Jordan Moseley, Alissa Haith, and Victoria Sebastian. The Lady Riders boast depth at both the guard and forward positions led by Harris and Victory, while Moseley should help the growth of freshman Zoe Scott at the center position. CR should compete near the top of the Henlopen Conference this season and once again find themselves playing in the state tournament.
Head Coach: Katie Byrnes
2013 Record: 3-17
Returnees: Alexis Heath, Pashence Harris, Reeva Jackson
Newcomers: Ashley Manifold, Giuliana Petrucci, Brionna Hall
Season Outlook: After a disappointing 3-17 record in 2013, the Lady Senators return for a new season on the hardwood looking to turn the program around. With some returning young standouts and talented newcomers, Dover is hoping to get better sooner rather than later. Returning for the Lady Senators are the guard duo of Alexis Heath and Paschence Harris, along with low-post player Reeva Jackson. Junior newcomer Giuliana Petrucci, a transfer student from Kentucky, looks to make an impact right away alongside fellow newcomers, sophomore Brionna Hall and freshman Ashley Manifold. With a deeper roster, and experienced players returning, the Lady Senators could turn some heads in 2014.
From the Coach: “We’re excited about this season and ready for a high level of competition. We have been working hard and creating a fast pace type of game, we expect to be a contender this season within the conference.”
Head Coach: Jason Bonner
2013 Record: 9-11 (Lost in Opening Round of State Tournament)
Returnees: Fatima Edwards, Sabrina Tilley, Kelly Winters, Kyra Black, Cherise Castello,
Newcomers: Kaylee Williams, Kailey Perry, Giana Garronbone
Season Outlook: Last season, the Polytech Panthers girls’ basketball squad made the state tournament for the first time in recent memory. While they fell to Charter School of Wilmington in the opening round last season, the Lady Panthers enter a new campaign looking to take another step forward. The Lady Panthers will be without graduating seniors Sarah Hillman, Victoria Hanhauser, Vanessa Hatton, and Lonnica Jenkins-Hilliard, but have a host of returnees including Fatima Edwards, Sabrina Tilley, Kyra Black, Kelly Winters, and Cherise Castello. This season, the Lady Panthers hope to get off to a hot start with their returning depth after finishing the season losing four of their last five last year. With last year’s success still fresh in their minds, the Lady Panthers hope to make it back-to-back appearances in the state tournament come late February.
From the Coach: “Every game in the Henlopen North Division is a big game, and we learned that last year. We’re looking forward to this season, staying at home a bit more and cutting down on mental mistakes and turnovers.”
LAKE FOREST SPARTANS
Head Coach: Trenita Shields
2013 Record: 15-5 (Lost in Second Round of State Tournament)
Returnees: Shayna Gourdine, Daia Daniels, Arika Burrell, Lenisha Benson, Nicole Scott
Newcomers: Essence Wells, Yashmine Rowely, Lenisha Benson, Mya Maddox, Alexia Cornish
Season Outlook: The Lake Forest girls’ basketball team routinely finished near the bottom of the standings yearly, until posting a 15-5 record in 2013 and earning a berth in the DIAA State Tournament. Last Year’s Lady Spartans’ team was led by an impressive group of seniors including Quantesha Pitts, Gabrielle Cubbage, Kori Johnson, Nikkesha Scott, and Roshell Dalton. The 2014 version of the Lady Spartans will look much different, aside from returning seniors Shayna Gourdine, and underclassmen Daia Daniels, Arika Burrell, Lenisha Benson, and Nicole Scott. A much younger Lake Forest squad hopes to continue the growth of the program from last season, as they look to return to the state tournament for the second straight season.
ST. THOMAS MORE RAVENS
Head Coach: Crystal Gordon
2013 Record: 6-14
Returnees: Sierra Hadik, Kelsey Huffman, Jasmine White
Newcomers: Alaina Robinson, Elise Conlin, Nia Pope, Giulia Randazzo, Sophia Stafford
Season Outlook: The St. Thomas More girls’ basketball squad enters a new season looking to continue their improvements from last season. While the Lady Ravens went just 6-14 a year ago, they improved their win total by two. The Lady Ravens return several contributors from last season including Kelsey Huffman, Sierra Hadik, and Jasmine White. Alongside a large group of newcomers and incoming freshman, the Lady Ravens hope this is the first step toward making the program competitive throughout the state.
