  • Caesar Rodney football had a successful 2013 season, fighting through one of the tougher schedules in the entire state to a 7-3 record and a berth into the state semifinals. This season, the goal for the Riders is no different from any other season, winning the state title.
Like nearly every team in the state, the Riders had to endure losses at key positions. However, the key to building a consistent winner, like CR has (Five playoff appearances in last six years), is having the ability to plug in new players at positions of need to stay in the hunt.
The Riders will replace 29 seniors in all, making up 19 overall starters. On offense the Riders will have to replace the likes of Alex Kemp (QB), Naquan Watkins (RB), Cody Connell (RB), Kendall Wicks (WR), Seth Brosius (TE), and a slew of offensive lineman including Brendyn Moore, Kyle Bailey, Devrin Baynard, Ian McCarthy, and Marcus Lawrence.
Junior quarterbacks Brian Lewis and Brinen LeFevre will compete to replace Kemp under center, while the backfield should be deep led by returning senior Malcom Stone, and junior Conner Christian. At wide receiver the Riders will rely on senior Rasheed Teasley to replace the production of Wicks.
The Riders’ offensive and defensive lines should be in good hands with returning seniors Tim Haugh, Andru Duranso, Chukwudi Ikwuagwu, Troy McNally, and juniors Nick Biddle and Sam McKibbin. They’ll be backed by a deep group of newcomers to the Riders including juniors Gary Gray, Kevin Lynch, Ross Smith, and Sadeek Shoates.
Once again, the Riders have an extremely tough schedule to start the season, facing off against the defending division I champions (Salesianum) and runner-up (Middletown), and defending division II champ (Hodgson Vo-Tech) in the opening three weeks of the season.
“CR returns a solid group of players who have gained valuable experience,” said Caesar Rodney Head Coach Mike Schonewolf. “Team development and individuals gaining starting experience will be important to the 2014 Riders.”
