  • The Lake Forest Spartans’ football program improved slightly in 2013, increasing their win total by one from the previous season going 6-4. Consistency was a problem for the Spartans last season as they traded wins and losses throughout the season. It wasn’t until the last two weeks of the season that the Spartans were able to tie two wins in a row together.
This season, the Spartans hope to take another positive step in the win column and find the consistency to get them back to the postseason for the first time since 2010.
The Spartans have some big holes to fill on this year’s team after the loss of graduates Ridgely Betts (QB), DyVaunte Bordley (RB), Michael Sabino (WR/OLB), and Cheyenne Rivera (FB/LB).
Looking to fill the void left over by the sometimes explosive Betts at quarterback will be senior Logan Simpson and junior Noah Feague-Johnson, both who have experience with the varsity squad. Meanwhile, waiting in the wings is sophomore signal caller Jeremy Crawford who will more than likely benefit from another year of watching from the sidelines.
In the backfield, senior Austin Lonski, and juniors Trevon Milton and Jordan Simpson return to form a competent core of running backs to take over for the production lost from Bordley. The Spartans also utilize the fullback position, where senior John Flamer returns alongside juniors Ryan Ortiz and Amir White. At the wide receiver position, seniors Keith Barnes and Shawn McConnell lead a deep group including juniors Dominick Caldwell-Sabino and Alexander Portillo.
The Spartans should thrive on both sides of the ball on the defensive and offensive lines with a number of experienced players returning at those positions. Senior offensive lineman Andrew Eckenrode, Timothy Dixon, and Brian Thomson return along with juniors Traequan Hardy, Dawaunta Parker, and tackles Jamar Brown, Tony Williams and Kyle Longhany all of whom should make up a solid defensively line as well.
“Several positions will be up for battle, practice will be fun and intense,” said Lake Forest Head Coach Fred Johnson. “If we can stay healthy we will be a very competitive team every week.”
