  •  Each new school year brings change to the schools in the Dover area, whether it’s a new crop of teachers entering the district or a new set of educational standards. This year changes in the Polytech, Capital and Lake Forest school districts include new facilities, new faces and new state standards. Each school district shared a few of the changes they expect to see in the new year.
    Polytech School District
Addition of auditorium, practice gym and career and technical classrooms.
Addition of a culinary arts program for high school students. Previously, the school offered culinary arts in their adult education program. This year, high school students will have the chance to learn the ins and outs of the kitchen.
Lots of new faces on the school’s staff. Quite a few staff members at Polytech retired last year and their positions have been filled with new staff.
    Capital School District
    New Dover High School
Full implementation of Common Core. The district has spent the last several years rolling out the new state standards. Now, for the first time, Common Core curriculum and practices are being fully implemented.
Project S.E.A.R.C.H. This program offers students with special needs in the school district the opportunity to receive job experience at Kent General.
    Lake Forest School District
    Common Core standards.
Teacher and administrator evaluations. Teachers and administrators will have to adjust to a new rubric that evaluates their performance.
A new superintendent and two new school board members. After May’s school board elections and a new superintendent coming on board in July, there are a few new faces in the district.
