  • Comic Con to spawn in Dover

    Following the success of its first Otakon convention in 2013, Dover Public Library will kick things up a notch for its next event on Saturday, which is Comic Con.
    This inaugural event is expected to lure a couple hundred people to the library as it’ll feature special guests including the Philadelphia Ghostbusters and the popular Star Wars costuming organization the 501st Legion.
    And there’s more. There will be a costume contest and dance party. Guests will have the opportunity to buy comics, graphic novels, games, action figures and more. A Grotto's Pizza food truck along with other local restaurants will be on hand.
    Registration for the costume contest will be held from 10 a.m. to noon. However, guests will not be allowed to bring prop weapons to Comic Con.
    A face-painting artist will be on site charging $3 to work their magic on human canvases.
    Later, participants ages 13 or older can attend a Fandom Dance, from 5 to 7 p.m. Although the Fandom Dance is free, a ticket will be required to participate. Tickets are available on the third floor of the library.

    The weekend warriors Mike Hines and the Look will reconquer the stage at the Fire & Ice Lounge of Dover Downs Hotel & Casino on Saturday.
    Mike Hines and the Look is a sextet that specializes in R&B, hip-hop, pop and old school funk, along with a small taste of soul and disco. Mike Hines, the lead singer has been a featured vocalist in several bands on the east and west coasts, and he’s opened for acts such as The Ohio Players, Atlantic Star, Taylor Dayne, Chris Rock, Al B. Sure!, Lisa, Lisa and Naughty by Nature.

    The fashion magazine Teen Vogue and Simon will launch a funky back-to-school event at the Dover Mall on Saturday.
    “ABCs of Style,” to be held in the Mall’s Promotional Court, will feature activities including an exclusive fashion style, which is comprised of new looks designed by fashion experts.
    There will also be mall-wide discount offers and samples, such as free interactive games and a swag bag featuring items from St. Ives, Simple, Q-tips and Fox’s new fall series, “Red Band Society.”
