  • UPDATE:
A phone call to the Dover Police early Tuesday has resulted in the arrest of a man wanted in connection with carjacking incident the day before.
Robert Sanders, 21, of the 200 block of North New Street, also was wanted by Dover Police on four counts of fourth-degree rape, said department spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman.
Sanders’ involvement in the Aug. 11 carjacking incident had been profiled on the department’s Facebook page, Hoffman said. A Dover resident who saw the posting spotted Sanders driving the carjacked vehicle on Walker Road and turning into the parking lot of The Heritage at Dover senior home. The witness called police after seeing Sanders park the car, a 2007 Mercury Milan, behind the buildings and walk away.
Dover officers were on the scene within 60 seconds and arrested Sanders at about 9 a.m.; he offered no resistance to the arresting officers, Hoffman said.
Sanders will be charged with first-degree carjacking, possession of firearm during commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon as well as the rape charges, Hoffman said.
    ORIGINAL STORY:
Dover Police have identified a local man, Robert Sanders, as a suspect in an early morning carjacking.
Sanders also is wanted by Dover Police on four counts of fourth-degree rape in an unrelated case, said department spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman. That case involved a 15-year-old, Hoffman said.
The carjacking incident took place at 4 a.m. Aug. 11, in the Tudor Industrial Park, off South Little Creek Road. The victim, a 22-year-old man, who was to meet a woman in the Manchester Square development, accepted Sanders’ offer of a ride, Hoffman said. However, after arriving at the industrial area, Sanders allegedly pulled a gun, ordered the man to get out and then drove off with the car.
Sanders last was seen driving the gold-colored 2007 Mercury Milan westbound on South Little Creek Road. The vehicle as New Jersey license plates, but the license number is not known, Hoffman said.
In addition to the rape charges, when located Sanders will be charged with first-degree carjacking, possession of firearm during commission of a felony, and carrying a concealed deadly weapon.
