Work on pipes underneath two Kent County roads will require drivers to detour around the construction, said DelDOT spokeswoman Louise Holt.

DelDOT will replace pipes on Hourglass Road, between Judith and Slaughter Station roads between 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 25 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 27.

Work also will be done on Jarrells Road, between Hopkins Cemetery and Little Mastens Corner roads between 7 a.m. Monday, Aug. 18 and 3 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 20.

Local access will be maintained for residents and emergency vehicles, and detour signage will be posted for motorists, Holt said.

Crossroad pipe replacements are replacements of old deteriorated pipes that carry water from one side of the road to the other. Most of the time, they are corrugated metal pipes that have rusted through and have holes in them, Holt said.

Once they get holes in them, the fill dirt that supports the road can be lost into the pipe. This can create a sinkhole in the road and can cause the pipe to collapse if not replaced.
