Two Dover men, Benjamin Hibbler and Michael Shahan, were killed Monday night in a crash north of Little Creek.

Two Dover men were killed Monday night in a crash north of Little Creek.

The crash occurred at 7:05 p.m. July 21, on Del. Route 9, north of North Little Creek Road, said Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.

The police investigation indicated a 2001 tow truck, driven by Benjamin W. Hibbler, 26, was traveling at a high rate of speed when it entered a left hand curve. The truck’s passenger-side tires went off the eastern edge of the roadway, causing it to turn and cross the road while spinning counterclockwise, Fournier said.

The truck left the roadway, stopping only when it smashed into a large metal utility pole.

Hibbler, who was not wearing a seat belt, was taken to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital, but died as a result of his injuries.

His passenger, identified as Michael J. Shahan, 23, also was not wearing a seat belt and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Initial indications are that speed and alcohol may have contributed to the crash, Fournier said.

Route 9 between North Little Creek Road and White Oak Road was closed for approximately 3.5 hours while the crash was investigated and cleared.
