  • Five dishes to eat at the Delaware State Fair

  • When it comes to fair food, certain things instantly come to mind, like funnel cakes, cotton candy and corn dogs. But food choices at the Delaware State Fair go far beyond the ordinary. Something can be found for every taste and the possibilities are almost endless, so here’s a look at some of the foods not to be missed.
    Udairy Creamery ice cream
    There is almost nothing better to beat the heat than a heaping scoop of ice cream. The Udairy Creamery makes ice cream using milk harvested from cows at the University of Delaware’s College of Agriculture and Natural Resources. With flavors like caramel corn, peanut butter and banana, mango and mint and cookies, a scoop of cool creamy ice cream will be hard to resist during the sweltering heat of Delaware in July. The decadent frozen treats can be found on Holloway Avenue.
    Fried junk food
    Whether it be a funnel cake, a fried peanut butter cup or an over-the-top candy bar, some type of fried ridiculousness is a must have at the state fair. There are few places where it’s socially acceptable to eat a deep fried Snickers bar on a stick, but at the Delaware State Fair it’s all part of the experience. Little Richard’s Fry Stand on East Rider Road has a great variety with fried Oreos, fried Twinkies and an assortment of fried candy bars.
    Fried pepper jack cheese
    In keeping with the theme of fried ridiculousness, fried cheese is a must have. Most people have had a mozzarella stick, but fried cheese at the state fair is a different story. At Griff’s California Cheesen, sticks of cheese are dipped in batter and fried until the melted cheese is encased in a crunchy, golden brown shell. The fried pepper jack is a nice, spicy treat, served with a side of ranch dressing to cool things down. Griff’s is located in the food court.
    Fried chicken platter
    The Delaware State Grange has been a staple of the Delaware State Fair for decades. Their chicken platters, sides and desserts are legendary. The Grange’s fried chicken is known for being juicy and delicious. Platters are served with potato salad, a roll with butter, corn on the cob and a slice of tomato, although we’ve never been sure what we’re supposed to do with that last one. Aside from the legendary food, diners can feel good about opening their wallets at the landmark because the funds raised at the stand go to local Future Farmers of America and 4-H chapters. The Grange is located at the corner of East Rider Road and Murphy Street.

    Newark-based food truck Roaming Raven is a newcomer to the Delaware State Fair, having just opened for business this year. But their cheesesteaks are top notch. They serve both chicken and beef cheesesteaks, which you can top with fried onions, sauerkraut or peppers and, of course, cheese sauce. The truck also serves crispy Tater Tots, which come plain, with crab seasoning or with cheese. The Roaming Raven can be found at the food court.
