  • Local twins to appear as extras in Orange is the New Black

  • Raven and Skye Rogers are typical 6-month-old babies.
They both love to smile and each already has her own personality. Skye tends to put everything within reach into her mouth, while Raven loves to fix her large dark eyes on things and study them.
But, unlike most babies, these Dover twins have already launched their acting careers.
Sky and Raven just wrapped up filming their TV debut as extras on the set of the Netflix original series, “Orange is the New Black”, which follows characters inside a women’s prison.
The girl’s journey to stardom began when their mother, Monique Benitez, connected with Adorable Talent Management in New York City through Instagram.
Jessica Moultrie, owner Adorable Talent put a post out on the social media website seeking Hispanic infants about six months old. About 100 submissions poured in, but Skye and Raven stood out, Moultrie said.
“At that age, a lot of babies look similar, but they were the cutest out of the bunch,” she said. “That made them stand out.”
Moultrie passed photos of Raven and Skye along to the producer of “Orange is the New Black” and the Rogers twins were selected to appear in the show.
“It feels crazy,” Benitez said. “You know weird, exciting, over whelming, a lot of feelings. I’m just excited. I can’t wait. [The new episodes of the show don't] come out until next year, but it’s going to be exciting to watch them and let other people see them.”
Netflix spokesman Don Halcombe confirmed that the twins will be serving as extras, but declined to comment on what role the girls would be playing.
“We don't confirm or comment on potential storylines,” he said in an email.
But Benitez said the twins will be portraying the niece of the character Dayanara “Daya” Diaz in one of the show’s many flashbacks that character’s back stories.
The twins won’t actually appear as twins in the show, but rather as one baby. In Mary Kate and Ashley style, the babies were swapped in and out throughout filming, so production wouldn’t have to be stopped one baby got fussy.
Raven did most of the filming, Benitez said.
“Raven is quiet and laid back,” she said. “Skye likes to scream and talk to you a lot. She wasn’t able to do so much.”
Benitez, Raven, Skye, and the girls’ father, Curtis Rogers, traveled to New York about two weeks for a day of shooting that included three scenes.
Page 2 of 2 - Rogers said the twins got the red carpet treatment while on set.
“They had their own wardrobe trailer right next to the stars trailers, but their wardrobe was only a Gymboree hat and a stack of diapers,” he said. “It was kind of funny.”
The crew also made sure Raven and Skye were treated like A-list actors.
“They treated them better than the bigger people,” Benitez said. “It was really cool every time we walked on set they said ‘Shh, babies on the set.’  They were polite people.”
Benitez said the twins did well when it came time to play their part on camera. She said she was told that some babies don’t enjoy being on set and have a bit of a meltdown, but both Raven and Skye took to the actors and didn’t need any second takes, she reported.
Because the girls are so young, Benitez and Rogers are putting together mementos so that the girls can look back at their TV debut when they’re older.
“We have scrapbooks and we’ve taken pictures down off Instagram and have printed them out,” Benitez said. “When the show comes out, we’ll record it and keep that copy and make a little album of them so they know that they did it and so they can remember it.”
Benitez and Rogers said they are hoping that their twin girls will be able to further the fledgling careers as they grow older.
“It gives them opportunities to see things that we weren’t able to see growing up,” Rogers said. “I think as long as we keep them grounded and focus on their education, and as long as I can fund it, of course, I want them to experience as much of the world as they can … If people want to see my daughters simply because they’re adorable I feel as though they should take that opportunity and I’m going to support them as long as their smiling when they do it.”
The exact air date of the twins’ appearance on “Orange Is The New Black,” has not been announced, although it will be a part of Season 3, which is slated to debut in 2015.
