  • A bill sponsored by state Sen. Brian Pettyjohn, R-Georgetown, regarding stricter gun laws for mentally ill patients passed unanimously in the Senate on June 24.
    Senate Bill 162 expands the crime of possession and purchase of deadly weapons by individuals to include perpetrators of violent crimes who have been found not guilty by reason of insanity, guilty but mentally ill, or mentally incompetent to stand trial. The bill also includes juveniles who fall under these categories.
    Under Sen. Pettyjohn’s bill, the aforementioned individuals are barred from possessing firearms.
