Construction is underway for a new business in the town of Frederica.

Demolition workers were on the scene last week in Frederica, tearing down a vacant building in preparation for construction of a new Family Dollar store.

The work is being done at 146 W. Front St., adjacent to the U.S. Post Office.

Construction began June 23, said Bryn R. Winburn, public and media relations manager for the Charlotte, N.C.-based firm.

The completed store, which is scheduled to open late in 2014, will encompass approximately 8,000 square feet.

Family Dollar will seek area residents to run the store once it opens, Winburn said.

“Each of our stores employs between eight and 10 team members and we look to hire from the communities we serve,” she said.

The firm did a number of studies and used computer models to work out where in Kent County the store should be located, settling on Frederica as an ideal location, Winburn said.

“At Family Dollar, our goal is to open stores in neighborhoods and communities that are in close proximity to where our customers live and work,” she said.

Mandy Slody, chairwoman of Frederica’s planning and zoning committee, said the Family Dollar company approached the town about 12 months ago with an eye toward building a store on the site of a long-closed physician’s office.

“They got approval to tear it down in November or December, worked with our engineer and got everything done they needed to do,” she said. “They’ve been very easy to work with.”

Frederica had a number of businesses within the town limits in years past, but now has little more than a pizza restaurant, liquor store and a small general store. The Family Dollar store definitely will help improve the town’s tax base, but also will be a boon to those living there.

“We’ve got a lot of people in down who do not drive, and they’re very excited that they can just walk down the street and go shopping,” Slody said.

Family Dollar has seven stores in Delaware, including Middletown, Smyrna, Dover, Harrington and Milford. It has more than 8,100 stores throughout the country.
