  • KONGOS opened the Main Stage at Firefly on Friday with an alternative style that had the crowd rocking hard.
The four South African brothers, who are now based in Arizona, came into the spotlight in their home country with their 2012 single “I’m Only Joking.”
Their recent rise to stardom in the states followed the release of the hit “Come With Me Now,” which they saved for last after riling the crowd up with a mixture of rock, dance and even some reggae beats.
Johnny Kongos brought out an accordion about the third song, and it was surprising how hard he rocked it alongside his keyboard. Front man and bassist Dylan Kongos, drummer Jesse Kongos and guitarist Daniel Kongos encouraged the crowd to sing and bounce along.
But what really got the crowd going was a drop-in by a guest they introduced as Mozart, who threw some rap into the mix alongside a personalized remix of The Beatles’ “Come Together.”
KONGOS’ style is rock enough for the most hardcore, tattooed rock lovers to enjoy, but fit in perfectly with the masses of flower-crowned ladies hoping for a sound to make their hips sway. Their songs and their stage presence make it impossible not to at least tap a foot, or in some cases, throw some fist pumps into the air.
The band just returned from a 10-day tour in Europe, and welcomed the Firefly crowd with an enthusiasm for being back in the states that had to make fans hopeful that they’re not going anywhere any time soon.
