Two Harrington men are in jail following their arrest on weapons and burglary charges following an investigation into break-ins and thefts in southern and central Kent County.
Daniel P. Everett and Robert Wright III, both 25, were taken into custody June 5, said Delaware State Police spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Troopers began investigating a number of burglaries that were occurring in the Felton, Harrington, Houston, and Marydel areas starting in the beginning of May 2014, Fournier said. In the majority of these crimes, the suspects would break into unoccupied homes and take jewelry and firearms; they then would try to sell the jewelry at local pawn shops.
Detectives identified Everett and Wright as suspects through these jewelry sales, Fournier said.
Investigators on surveillance patrol in the Felton area spotted the pair leaving a development off Irish Hill Road shortly after two separate burglaries were reported on June 5. They followed the vehicle to a home on Upper King Road; Wright was taken into custody without incident. Everett was caught in a corn field as he tried to escape on foot.
The pair and their car were taken to Troop 3 in Camden where a search of the vehicle turned up a .44-caliber revolver in the center console as well as 17 firearms, all of which had been reported stolen earlier that day, in the trunk. Detectives interviewed the two and were able to recover an additional 15 weapons that had been stolen over the course of the month.
Everett was held at the Sussex Correctional Institution, Georgetown on a number of outstanding warrants until he was formally charged June 16; those charges include 11 counts of second-degree burglary, 36 counts of theft of a firearm and numerous counts of theft and criminal mischief. He continues to be held at SCI in lieu of a $56,050 cash bond.
Wright was jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna, on charges of second-degree burglary, theft of a firearm and additional counts of theft and criminal mischief.
He is being held on a $23,000 cash bond.
