  • Emily Opdyke of Little Creek was recently named as Capital School District’s Mentor of the Year.
    Opdyke has served as a mentor at East Dover Elementary for four years.Opdyke received her was a awarded the title on June 5. It was presented to her by school board member Sean Christiansen, school board President Matthew Lindell, Assistant Superintendent Sandra Spangler, Superintendent Michael Thomas and Parent Coordinator Dianne Bogie.
    Opdyke, who also works at as a planning and development assistant at Tidewater Utilities Inc., was also presented with a tribute from Gov. Jack Markell and Lt. Gov. Matt Denn.
    Working with her mentee, Helena, helps not only the child, but Opdyke herself, Opdyke said.
    “The feeling I get when I go to see Helena is hard to explain, but it is a good feeling,” she said. “Some children just need that friend they can talk with, play games with or just hand out.  I am proud to be that friend for Helena.”
