Two persons, including a Marydel resident who had received his high school diploma on June 4, were killed Saturday night in a two-car accident near Marydel.

Two Marydel men, one a 2014 graduate of Dover High School, died Saturday evening in a head-on collision that took place on Del. Route 8.

Estanislao Lopez-Berduo, 27, and Zachary T. Rogers, 18, sustained multiple traumatic injuries and were pronounced dead at the scene, said Delaware State Police spokesman Sgt. Paul Shavack.

Rogers had received his high school diploma on June 4.

The accident occurred at about 10:12 p.m. June 7 just west of Enss Road, near Marydel, Shavack said.

The preliminary investigation showed alcohol involvement was a factor on Lopez-Berduo’s part, Shavack said.

Police so far have determined the 1999 Ford Escort driven Lopez-Berduo was headed westbound on Route 8 when he crossed the median into the eastbound lanes, just west of Enss Road. The Ford hit Rogers’ 2000 Pontiac Sunfire head-on, Shavack said.

Rogers, who was driving the Pontiac, was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the collision. Two passengers, identified as Avianna Walker-Lane, 17, and Mikeshia A. Stewart, 19, both of Dover, were taken by helicopter to the Christiana Hospital’s trauma center, New Castle, for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Their condition is not known, Shavack said.

Walker-Lane also graduated from Dover High School on Wednesday.

Route 8 was closed for approximately three hours while the crash was cleared; the Delaware State Police Collision Reconstruction Unit continues to investigate the incident.
