  • A memorial golf tournament will be held June 27 to honor Dover soldier Sean W. Mullen at the Dover Air Force Base Eagle Creek Golf Course.
Mullen, a U.S. Army warrant officer, was killed June 2, 2013, in Numrioz Province, Afghanistan.
Funds from the golf tournament will be contributed toward construction of a flagpole in front of the administration area at the Akridge Scout Reservation on New Burton Road and a three-flagpole site on the parade field. There also is a Delaware Technical Community College scholarship for a deserving senior at Mullen’s alma mater, Caesar Rodney High School.
“Sean had been very active in Scouting and one of his former scout leaders approached us, saying he was very involved in the new Scout reservation,” said Mullen’s mother, Miriam.
“He said he was going to see about getting one of the pavilions named after Sean.”
While the family was responsive to that idea, Mrs. Mullen said the idea evolved into naming the flagpole sites in honor of the fallen soldier.
“It came up that that might be more meaningful,” she said.
Neither Mullen nor her husband, Bill, play golf, so they at first discounted the golf tourney idea, but the notion took on additional life when a friend’s daughter, who had experience in organizing golf tournaments volunteered to take on the job.
“Sean’s wife, Nancy, is always thinking in terms of what Sean would want,” Mrs. Mullen said. “Sean was very unassuming and humble and he’d probably say we didn’t need to be doing all of this.
“But we still thought it was a good cause because Scouting was a very important part of his life.”
“We think he would appreciate all of the people who came out and supported our family,” Mr. Mullen said.
Registration for the 18-hole, four-person scramble event begins at 9:30 with tee-off at 11 a.m. Golfers will receive prizes and dinner at the conclusion of the event.
    Registration is $60 per golfer.
Mullen enlisted in the Army in 1995 and was assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, followed by an assignment to the 82nd Airborne Division. He served as a medical sergeant before being selected for warrant officer training. He later was assigned to the 5th Group Special Forces and deployed to Afghanistan in January 2013 as an assistant detachment commander.
His military decorations included the Bronze Star Medal with two oak leaf clusters, the Purple Heart Medal, the Meritorious Service Medal with two oak leaf clusters and the Army Commendation Medal with two oak leaf clusters.

“We thought this would be a good idea in keeping Sean’s memory alive,” she said.

Banner recognition and sponsorship opportunities also are available.
