Two candidates vied for one at-large seat on the Caesar Rodney Board of Education in Tuesday’s election. Jessica Marelli earned the seat, which carris a five year term, with 639 votes, beating out Flavous Statham, who earned 520 votes. Statham was tough competition, Marelli said.
“It was a tough election,” Marelli said. “It was a good race. Mr. Statham was a very good candidate for the seat and I’m just glad that I’ll get to serve.”
Marelli has already begun to think about what she’d like to accomplish when she takes her seat on the board.
“My biggest plan is I’d like to increase communications between the teacher’s union, the school board and the district office and then out to the community also,” she said. “I hope that as a school board member I’ll be able to help all the kids in the district, but also be able to see it directly affect my own.”
Having children in the district makes a difference for her, Marelli said
“Because I have a personal stake in it it makes it mean so much more to me that the district does well,” she said.
Despite his loss at the polls Statham was feeling like a winner on Tuesday night.
"I'm very thankful for the people who came out and voted for me and believed in me," Statham said. "I feel like I'm a winner because I saw so many of the people I know and former students I had and colleagues during the campaign."
They were just great. It was so nice to see them and they had confidence in me. I'd like to thank them. I don't feel like i lost. i might have lost election, but I feel like I'm a winner."
Marelli’s term on the board of education begins on July 1 and will end on June 30 of 2019.
