  • Help our casinos, don't hinder them

We have a proven job-creating, revenue-producing, visitor-generating industry in the three casino/horse racing businesses that now exist in Delaware, and we want to penalize them by taxing them into bankruptcy and laying off all their workers.
Imagine for a moment the Dover Downs Hotel & Casino closing; visualize a vacant building complex in the center of our capital city. The ripple effect of that site lying empty on all other real estate will be devastating.
Think about the Harrington area losing the tourist/visitors that the casino there attracts. And then think of the thousands of unemployed employees we may never again attract jobs for. If we think we have a budget crisis now as we talk about new taxes, imagine the crisis that we will have if those businesses close. If we taxed any other businesses even a small fraction of what we do the casinos, there wouldn’t be one of then that stayed in Delaware.
To not change this insane fiscal policy will be devastating and the General Assembly must elevate its thinking and show the strong leadership we need, or watch Dover and Harrington as well as all of Delaware slip into financial ruin.
