  • Woman arrested in torture/robbery case

  • Dover Police have arrested Shirley Smith, a suspect in the torture/robbery case involving an 82-year-old man.

  • Officers with the Dover Police Department arrested 33-year-old Shirley Smith the afternoon of Thursday, April 17, after receiving an anonymous tip of her location from a citizen who learned of the case via the Dover Police Department's social media platforms, said police spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman.
    Smith was arrested shortly after 5 p.m. at the McKee Crossing Shopping Center at the intersection of McKee and College roads. She was taken into custody after a short struggle with arresting officers, Hoffman said.
    Smith, of the 100 block of Morris Drive, Dover, was charged with first-degree kidnapping, first-degree robbery, first-degree assault, possession of a deadly weapon during commission of a felony, possession of a deadly weapon by person prohibited, second-degree conspiracy, criminal mischief under $1,000 and theft of a motor vehicle.
    Bond information was not available.
    Police now are looking for a man involved in this case, who has been identified as Timothy Safford, 38, of the 1200 block of Walker Road, Liberty Court Apartments.
    A man who earlier had been declared a person of interest in the case has been cleared, Hoffman added.
