Just a day removed from coming up short to the defending state champs, St. Mark’s, the Caesar Rodney Riders baseball team respond Friday with a dramatic extra-innings 3-2 win over conference foe Polytech.

Steven Clavier singled home Quinton Ivy in the bottom of the ninth inning to give the Riders the victory.

While Clavier came through in the clutch Friday for the Riders, Friday’s match up was a pitching duel from the start. CR’s Travis Dill and Polytech’s Connor Chasanov paced one another nearly the entire game giving up just two runs apiece over seven and eight innings pitched respectively.

The Rider offense struck first getting to Chasanov for one run in the bottom half of the first inning. The 1-0 score would hold up until the top of the fourth when the Panthers tied things up at 1-1. While the Rider offense took back the lead in the bottom half of the fifth, the Panthers responded once again in the top half of the sixth leading to extra innings.

The Rider offense was paced by a strong day from Quinton Ivy who finished the day 2-for-4 while scoring the game-winning run. Kendall Wicks and Seth Brosius knocked in the Riders’ first two runs on the afternoon rounding out CR’s offensive contributors.

Pacing the Panthers, Sean Hanhauser and Michael Obermire finished with an RBI apiece in the loss. Polytech will look to bounce back Tuesday when they host Lake Forest at 4:15 p.m.

The Riders, now 2-2, look to start a winning streak Tuesday when they take on another conference opponent Milford at 4:15 p.m.
