  • Emmy and Haci Demir recently opened Bella Dee’s Pizzeria in the building that used to house A Taste of Italy, just outside of Dover. The couple decided to take a chance and uproot their life in Connecticut to start a new business and a new life in Dover.
“Our families have both been in the restaurant industry for a long time,” Emmy Demir said. “My husband and I wanted to go out on our own and try to establish some roots somewhere for our children. We moved away from our family in Connecticut and decided to try it down here because we are both passionate about food.”
Their mutual passion for food comes, in part, from the circumstances under which Emmy and Haci met, said Haci Demir.
“When I was 18 I came to America and started working in the restaurant business,” he said. “I met my wife while we were working at my father’s restaurant. After eight years and two kids, maybe that’s another reason we love restaurants.”
Business has been steadily improving, but the Demirs have faced challenges along the way. An error in converting their phone line from residential to business left them without a phone connection for roughly 25 days and they are still working to put a new face on an old building.
"It’s hard because the location we bought has been a lot of other food places,” Emmy Demir said. “Over the last 10 to 15 years the place has been six or so different restaurants. We’re trying to put our name out there and let everybody know we are new and different. It’s been tough to get going but I feel like we’re really building a good fan base.”
A few of the most popular dishes at Bella Dee’s are the Philly cheesesteak pizza, a white pizza topped with steak, American and provolone cheese and onions; and the Florentine pizza, a white pizza topped with mozzarella, spinach, garlic, feta and tomatoes. The wings also sell very well, Emmy Demir said.
Bella Dee’s also serves up the Italian American classics that Haci Demir learned to make while he was working as a chef in his father’s restaurant, like manicotti, lasagna and chicken cacciatore. Haci picked up his pizza skills when he worked as a cook in a pizzeria.
Aside from their food the other service Bella Dee’s brings to the table is that they deliver to Marydel and Hartly for just a $1 delivery charge, Emmy Demir said.
“We go about 10 miles out one way,” she said. “That covers all of Hartly. That’s big for people because they didn’t have a lot of options for delivery. We had to make sure we could reach people who needed it. We also go out to U.S. Route 13.”
Page 2 of 2 - With the exception of a few delivery drivers, Haci and Emmy make up the entire team that keeps the restaurant running.  Starting their first restaurant has been quite an interesting experience and a big change, the couple says, but it all comes down to their love of food.
“We just have a passion for food,” Emmy Demir said “I know when we make something we’re trying to make the best product we can. I’m not going to serve you food I wouldn’t feed my own family.”
