Accident investigators with the Delaware State Police are probing the circumstances surrounding a two-car crash that occurred Tuesday night near Dover.
The incident occurred around 10:10 p.m. on East Lebanon Road, west of the Gateway South Shopping Center, said division spokesman Master Cpl. Gary Fournier.
Police determined William R. Vonbirgelen, 27, of Townsend, was driving a 2002 Honda Civic westbound on East Lebanon Road when, for unknown reasons, the Civic crossed the center median and entered the eastbound lanes.
A second driver, identified as Ashley N. Hurd, 25, of Dover, was operating a 2004 Volkswagen Passat driving eastbound in the right lane. She attempted to avoid the Civic by taking evasive action but was struck in the left rear, causing both vehicles to spin and come to a stop in the middle of the roadway.
Vonbirgelen, who was properly restrained, first was taken by EMS Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital before being flown to Christiana Medical Center, where he is listed in critical condition, Fournier said.
Hurd, who was properly restrained, was taken by ambulance to KGH where she was treated and released with non-life-threatening injuries.
Both lanes of East Lebanon Road were closed for approximately two hours as the crash was investigated and cleared.
