  • Youth is synonymous with inexperience, but in athletic competition it’s not tolerated as an excuse nor does it offer any type of mercy from opponents.  That’s something the Dover Senators boys’ basketball squad is suffering through now as the season comes to a close.
On Saturday, a young Dover team dropped their fourth game in a row, and five of their last six, in a 58-43 loss to the Middletown Cavaliers.
With just two seniors on the team this season for Dover, a learning curve was expected. However, entering play Saturday the Senators still had a glimmer of hope of making it to the field of 24 in the state tournament.
Middletown came into play Saturday on the opposite spectrum of the Senators’ situation, having won five in a row catapulting their record above .500 for the first time this season.
The game stayed relatively close as the teams played to a stale-mate after a quarter before the Cavaliers took a four-point lead into the half thanks to a last second layup at the buzzer.
The same held true in the third quarter, as Middletown upped their small lead to five heading into the final quarter of play.
In the quarter, the Dover defense became a victim of the Cavaliers pace, giving up 23 points in the stanza to fall by 15.
Middletown came at Dover with a well-rounded attack, whether it was running the floor after a turnover, or rotating the ball in a half-court offense, everything clicked for the Cavs in the fourth. The Cavaliers were led by four players scoring in double-figures Saturday, Donivan Roy lead the way with 14 while Matt Pinkett, Caylab Herrera and Chad Poarch all finished with 11 apiece.
Sophomore’s Terrence Woodlin and Jordan Allen helped lead the Dover offense, each scoring 13 points while senior Shekiem Yarbray added eight of his own. And while Dover’s 13 points in the fourth was their highest quarter total of the game, they weren’t able to find the rhythm to try and pace the Cavaliers.
