  • In perhaps the biggest game in the Henlopen Conference this year, the Caesar Rodney boys basketball squad kept control of the conference with a 69-65 double-overtime win over Sussex Tech on Thursday night.
The night didn't start out the way the Riders would have hoped, falling behind by 10 to the Ravens early in the contest. However, CR counter Tech's strong first stanza with an offensive response in the second quarter, trailing the Ravens by just a point when the teams hit the locker rooms for half time.
After a back-and-forth third quarter, the Ravens took a basket lead into the fourth when both offenses exploded. The Riders and Ravens combined for 46 points in the final quarter, leaving the teams dead-locked at 58-58 at the end of regulation.
Both teams entered the first overtime cautiously, playing sound defense that lead to just a bucket apiece for both forcing a second overtime.
CR's Alex Kemp gave the Riders a bucket lead with time running out, leaving Sussex Tech with a shot to tie or go ahead. After the Ravens' attempt failed, the Riders grabbed the rebound, forcing a foul and free-throws at the other end. Collin Moore drained two free-throws to seal the game for the Riders.
James Palmer had huge game for the Riders, including some late-game rebounds and a team-high 21 points to pace the CR effort. The well-rounded Riders offense, including Palmer, had four players finish in double-figures, Moore finished with 11, while Kasreeyl Perry and Spencer Barton both had 10 points in the victory.
Kevin Larkin led the way for the Ravens, scoring a team-high 16 points in the Tech loss.
With just three games left for both, the Riders and Ravens come down the homestretch fighting for the conference crown. CR currently leads Tech by a game in the standings after securing a season split with Thursday's win.
The Riders return to the hardwood Tuesday, hosting rival Dover – while the Ravens will welcome the Polytech Panthers on Monday night.
