  • Robert Townsend Beardsley of Dover passed away Thursday, January 9, 2014 at Delaware Hospice Center, Milford, DE. Mr. Beardsley was born February 9, 1917 in Townsend, Delaware to the late Robert Townsend Beardsley and Myrtle Townsend Beardsley. He was 96. After starting work with the Dupont Company, he served 4 ½ years in the United States Army Air Corp during WWII, then returned to Dupont, retiring in 1978 as a systems analyst after 41 years with the company. Mr. Beardsley was a member of the Immanuel United Methodist Church, serving as treasurer for 30 years. Bob was an avid sailor and built thirteen sailboats. He also enjoyed building furniture for the family in his woodshop. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Margaret “Peg” Smerdon Beardsley of Dover; children, Dorothy Townsend Miller of Smyrna, Paul Robert Beardsley of Easton, MD, Susan Beardsley Humphrey of Oceanview, DE; grandchildren, Andrew, Katie, John, Jennifer, Beth and Maggie; great grandchildren, Hailey, Frank and Andrew. In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by his sister, Dorothy Jones. Bob was a resident of Townsend for 94 years. He was the last surviving great grandchild of Samuel Townsend, who, in 1854, donated land for the town's railroad, church and school, at which time the town's name was changed from Charleytown to Townsend. Memorial services will be held 11AM, Saturday, January 18, 2014 at the Immanuel United Methodist Church, 209 Main Street, Townsend. Friends may call one hour prior. Interment will be in the Townsend Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be made to Delaware Hospice, 911 S. Dupont Highway, Dover, DE 19901 or Immanuel United Methodist Church, 209 Main Street, Townsend. Letters of condolences may be sent and the guest book signed at www.torbertfuneral.com.
