WHAT: Polytech Panthers vs. Caesar Rodney Riders
      WHEN: Wednesday, January 8 – 7:00 p.m.
      WHERE: Caesar Rodney High School
  • While the high school wrestling season has been ongoing since early December, most teams have been competing in invitational tournaments. Now that we’ve hit January, the high school dual-meet schedule is about begin.

On Wednesday night, the Polytech Panthers and Caesar Rodney Riders will meet on the mat for what will be the Panthers first dual-meet of the season and the Riders second.

The Rider have participated in six invitational tournaments so far this season including the Ray Oliver Invitational, Ironman Wrestling Tournament, Milford Invitational, Beast of the East, Battle at the Beach, and most recently the Easton Duals. However, their first dual-meet of the season ended in a close loss to Cape Henlopen back on January 18.
Since the beginning of the season however, the Riders have seen some positive output from familiar faces. Defending state champion at 120lbs Micah Hight continues to impress in his senior season, along with Tony Scarfo (145lbs), Tommy Gallucci (132lbs), and Zach Parker (285lbs) who have all had a solid season so far.

On Wednesday, the Riders will certainly get the Panthers best as they try to go to 1-0 in their first dual-meet of the season.

The Panthers have seen some success this season participating in a variety of invitational tournaments. First, the Panthers took first-place in their own tournament, the Polytech Invitational before top finishes in both the Milford, Wetzel Classic, and most recently the Delcastle Invitational last weekend.

Standouts Kody Stevens and Andy Schmeusser have led the way for an impressive but young Panthers squad. While they’re led by two impressive wrestlers, the Panthers have had plenty of other competitors show they can be trusted to help the Panthers this season.

Sophomores Spenser Hahn, Justin Land, Mark Mullnack, Josh Price, and Austin Rains have all been impressive at times this season for Polytech.

However, on Wednesday night the Panthers will face their first true test in a very talented Caesar Rodney team. Though, the Panthers feel good about how they’ve performed this season and hope to continue that trend against the Riders due to the success they’ve had in recent tournaments.

“We finished fourth at the 18-team Delcastle tournament, and sixth last week at the 25-team Wetzel Classic in Pennsylvania,” said Polytech Head Coach Eric Buckson. “I think we’ve wrestled tough.”
The two Henlopen North squads will faceoff on the mat at 7:00 p.m. on Wednesday night at Caesar Rodney high school.
