  • Caesar Rodney’s Alex Kemp led the way for the Riders on Friday night, scoring a team-high 15 points helping CR to the tournament championship victory after a first round win over Tatnall.
The Cavaliers, who defeated Delaware Military Academy by nine in the opening round, fought hard with the still undefeated Riders but fell just short.
Senior Amyre Jones led all Cavaliers scorers, also tying Kemp, for a game-high 15 points in the loss.
Both teams came out Friday night willing to run as the pace was quick off the tip-off. The two teams traded some early misses but eventually came around to score a combined 15 first-quarter points with the Cavaliers out in front 8-7 after one.
In the second, the offense would pick up on both sides of the floor. Along with Kemp leading from the back-court, the Riders received contributions from junior James Palmer and senior Colin Moore who scored 10 and nine points respectively Friday night. Backed by some well-rounded scoring the Riders were able to go into the half tied with Middletown at 19-19.
The game remained close to open the second half, with both teams seemingly trading scores each time down the floor. After three quarters, the Riders had gained a slim lead at 33-32, thanks to some timely scoring from their supportive cast and several three-pointers from Kemp.
In the fourth, senior Matt Pinkett who finished with seven points on the night, and junior Andre Cunningham who finished with eight, did their best to help out Jones by keeping pace with the Riders in the final stanza. However, the CR offense was too much to handle and the Cavaliers gave up a game-high 16 points in the quarter to help the Riders pull away with the victory.
The Cavaliers, now 2-2 on the season, will return to the hardwood Tuesday, January 7 when they travel to A.I. duPont for the first of four straight road games.
Meanwhile, the Riders return to the court Friday night taking on Sussex Central in a rescheduled game.
