Robert William Groom of Dover passed away Tuesday, December 17, 2013 at home, at the age of 72. “Bob” was born September 27, 1941 in Evanston, Illinois to the late Alfred M. Groom and Alzina M. Ayers Groom. He had received his Bachelor of Arts Degree in Journalism from Drake University, home of the Bulldogs, in Des Moines, Iowa. He proudly served 20 years, all over the world, in the United States Air Force. Most recently as the Public Affairs Officer, retiring from Dover Air Force Base in 1984. He loved his military career and was a true patriot. After retirement, he worked at Milford and Kent General Hospitals in public affairs for 10 years and also spent time working for MBNA America. Bob loved sports, especially his Washington Redskins and Chicago Cubs, he also was a member of the “Quarterback Club” in Dover. One of his most loved activities was playing golf with his friends and son. He always looked forward to a round of golf whether at Wild Quail Golf & Country Club, where he was a charter member, or at one of the many courses throughout the country or world. He even had three holes in one over one summer. Bob was a member of Alpha Tau Omega fraternity at Drake University. He was also a member of Rotary Club, where he earned the Paul Harris Fellowship Award. Bob was a loving and much loved husband, father and grandfather, and he will be missed dearly. He is survived by his loving wife of 50 years, Susan Ann Daubert Groom of Dover; his daughter, Janne Elizabeth Grinstead and her husband, John of Dover; his son, Dennis Michael Groom and his wife, Lisa of Newark, DE; four grandchildren, Caitlin Grinstead and Marissa Grinstead of Dover, and Alex Groom and Ashley Groom of Newark. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 pm, Saturday December 21, 2013 at Torbert Funeral Chapel, 61 S. Bradford Street, Dover. Friends may call from 11:30 am to 1:30 pm. Interment will be in Sharon Hills Memorial Park.
