  • A new wave of development is beginning at the corner of U.S. Route 13 and Old North Road in Camden. This project comes on the heels of the construction of a new set of stores on the same property, leaving Camden residents wondering what is moving in next.

    THE PROJECT
A Walgreens pharmacy is set to be the next addition to CR Plaza, the property that houses a Redner’s Warehouse Market and a set of new retail spaces, according to Douglas Liberman, vice president of Larson Engineering, the Newark-based firm that drew up the plans for the new 14,820 square-foot Walgreens.
The new construction may have come as a surprise to some residents, but Camden’s town government has been aware of the plan since day one, according to Aaron Chaffinch, Camden’s town manager.
“They just got the permit and started building, but the pharmacy has been on the drawing board ever since the planning portion of Redner’s took place,” Chaffinch said.
The new store will sit in the open area that is currently located in front of Redner’s, with parking along the perimeter and around the front of the building.

    THE PROGRESS
Site work began at the new location several weeks ago to install water and sewer lines, according to Paul Connor, who is the project manager from Christiana Excavating Company, the company conducting the site work.
The construction of the future store, which is being conducted by GG+A Construction of Middletown, will begin in the second or third week of January, Liberman said.
“Construction should be complete towards the end of June and I expect that they’ll open at the end of July or early August,” Liberman said.
That time table is heavily dependent upon weather though, at least until the structure is enclosed. The structure won’t be fully enclosed until the roof goes on sometime around the end of March or the beginning of April, said Liberman, meaning that the structure will be open for the majority of the winter.
“I’m thinking it’s going to be a colder winter than usual and that can affect things,” Liberman said “There are techniques the guys can use to stay on track, but too much cold or snow could start to push things back,” he said.
When the new pharmacy is completed it will be one of a handful that currently call Camden home, but when facilities like Redner’s move in a pharmacy, often, is not too far behind, Chaffinch said.
Page 2 of 2 - “With the influx of people we have and with the air base being so close it could only be a plus for the town to have another pharmacy,” he said.
