  • Dover Police have arrested a local man following an assault of a two-month-old child. The incident came to light Dec. 8 when officers from the Criminal Investigations Unit were called to Bayhealth-Kent General Hospital on a child abuse case, said police spokesman Cpl. Mark Hoffman. The child suffered multiple contusions and swelling to the face, Hoffman said. Police developed the child's father, identified as Jamel McIver Sr., 21, of 420 W. Division St., as a suspect and arrested him a short time later. The child is being treated for his injuries, Hoffman said. McIver was charged with first-degree assault and endangering the welfare of a child, and then jailed at the James T. Vaughn Correctional Center, Smyrna, after failing to pay a $51,000 secured bond.
