James F. “Jimmie” Walls passed away on Sunday, November 17, 2013. Jimmie was born on June 14, 1923 to the late George E. and Nellie (Lynch) Walls. A lifelong resident of Georgetown, he graduated from Georgetown High School in 1942, attended the University of Delaware and served in the US Army Air Corps during WWII. He married Lilly Harrington on January 11, 1944 in Oklahoma City before shipping out with the Air Corps for India. Upon returning home from the service in 1946, he ran the Georgetown Lumber Company, The Dale Pepper Company, with his partner, the late Dale R. Pepper, and later, Walls Builders, in which he was joined by his son, George. Mr. Walls was a lifetime member of the Wesley United Methodist Church and was active in many community and civic organizations; including the Georgetown Millsboro Rotary Club, Georgetown Fire Department, Chamber of Commerce, and for many years acted as the Town Crier for Returns Day. He was also a member of Franklin Lodge #12 AF & AM and Nur Temple. In 2005, Mr. Walls was inducted into the Delaware Sports Hall of Fame. He “was considered by many to be one of the finest athletes in the history of Sussex County”. A few of his many achievements included, lettering in track, football, basketball and baseball in high school and playing football at U of D. While in the service, he played football, volleyball, basketball and baseball. After the military, Jimmie was instrumental in organizing the Eastern Shore Basketball League, The County Seaters. He was a founding member of Georgetown Little League and Sussex Pines Country Club, where he was an avid golfer for many years. In addition to his parents, Mr. Walls is preceded in death by a sister, Peggy Booth. Mr. Walls is survived by his wife of 69 years, Lilly; his sister, Virginia Walls Speakman; his daughter, Mary Lynn Downs and husband Jimmy; his son, George E. Walls and wife Mimi; three grandchildren, Kathryn Downs, Jamie Walls and Emily Walls; three great grandchildren, Keller and Hazel Mancari and Sienna Walls; three nieces, Linda Booth Rogers, Missy Speakman Vaughn and Amy Speakman; and a large extended family of relatives and friends. A memorial service will be held Thursday, November 21, 2013 at 1:30pm at Wesley United Methodist Church, 102 E. Laurel Street, Georgetown, with visitation after 12:00pm. A reception will immediately follow in Jones Hall. Burial will be private. In lieu of flowers contributions can be made in Jimmie’s honor to the church or Delaware Hospice, 100 Patriots Way, Milford, Del., 19963.
